A Gift for Yourself This Christmas

According to the Toy Retailers Association, the top three toys this Christmas will include a new version of the Cabbage Patch doll, something called a Furby, and an iPad-looking device for 5-to-7-year-olds.

Well, now that we’ve got that out of the way, have you ever considered giving yourself a gift this Christmas? As Christian moms and dads, we will run ourselves crazy thinking about the gifts for the kids, spouses, cousins, nieces, nephews, etc. I am exhausted already!

But what about a gift for us as Christian parents? We have spent a lot of time this year on articles with titles like Simplify and How to Stop Losing it with Our Kids. It occurs to me that one of the best things we can give ourselves as believing parents is some quality time to cut out the distraction and din of the world.

It takes spiritual discipline to be still, be alone, to listen, meditating on God’s Word, and just be. Consider Jesus’ example. Perhaps the most-needed person the world has ever known was constantly withdrawing to spend time in solitude with His Father and Holy Spirit (Mark 1:35).

In his book Forgotten God, Francis Chan put it best regarding solitude when he said, “It is undeniable that one of the greatest aspects of being in relationship with the Holy Spirit is the intimacy, security, and encouragement He brings us. It is then we can serve God as a beloved child rather than a stressed-out, guilt-ridden slave.”

With the Christmas season at hand, it is my sincere hope that we can all find the opportunity to give ourselves the gift of time.

Merry Christmas!
